Saas-Fee Ski Resort, Switzerland
Otherwise known as the ‘Pearl of the Alps’, Saas-Fee is set in a truly magical location which is surrounded by picturesque glaciers and extremely high mountains. This skiing area has an altitude of 1800m to 3600m, as well as many kilometres of snow-sure slopes and off-piste routes. The resort also has a car-free status, making it the perfect place for a peaceful ski holiday.
Offering 63 miles of runs, Saas-Fee is divided into three areas: Plattjen, Morenia and Langfluh. There are plenty of easy, moderate and difficult runs to suit all ages and abilities, along with nursery slopes for beginners. The resort is also known for being one of Switzerland’s more family-friendly ski areas, mainly because there are plenty of activities and flat slopes for children.
While many people choose to walk around the resort, there are public minibuses and a road train to help you get about with ease. There are 22 ski lifts in Saas-Fee with the Alpine Express gondola being the biggest, located in the centre of the resort.
Saas-Fee has managed to retain its traditional village charm thanks to its many narrow streets, stone houses, cowsheds and classical chalets. The resort has actually been built along a long main street, featuring a forest at one end and the bulk of the ski areas at the other. It’s considered a relatively small village, but one that never fails to amaze and delight nonetheless.
Saas-Fee Winter Activities
The beautifully traditional resort of Saas-Fee allows you to get your winter sports fix every season from mid-July right through to late-April. From beginners to freestylers, there is something for skiers of every level here, along with a big snowboard scene. You can also choose between three ski schools if you need help with learning the basics or mastering certain techniques.
For explorers and non-skiers, there’s the Ice Pavilion, which is the world’s biggest ice grotto, situated 3,500 metres above sea level. It has an underground ice playground and various ice sculptures to admire. If you’re visiting with children, take them to the Kid’s Fun Park for the exciting rides and toys. The resort also has an area set aside for all things non-ski related, such as paragliding, tobogganing and more.
If you prefer to relax and unwind, Saas-Fee offers plenty of wellness centres that provide massages, treatments, saunas and baths. There’s also a wide range of eateries for all tastes including fast food outlets, gourmet hideaways and the world’s highest revolving restaurant, Three S!xty. To get here, you can take the Metro Alpin, the highest funicular on the planet.
Saas-Fee has a fabulous apres-ski scene with plenty of bars throughout the village. In fact, the resort nightlife is rich and varied, from pubs with live music and entertainment to clubs with international DJ’s.
