La Tania Ski Resort
La Tania Ski Resort is a pretty resort located at 1350m in the 3 Vallées ski area, the largest in the world. Right next door are the larger resorts of Meribel and Courchevel which link with La Tania to make up the vast 600km of pistes in the Tarentaise Valley.
La Tania itself was purpose built for the 1992 Winter Olympics to provide spill over accommodation for the ice hockey teams and journalists, but since then has grown into a resort in its own right with charming wood clad chalets now in abundance located just above the town centre in a picturesque forest setting. The town centre remains car free and is well stocked with shops, bars, restaurants, a bakery, tourist office, ski school, ski hire shops and the main lift station.
As for the skiing – there really is plenty to go round. Whether skier or snowboarder, beginner or advanced, the choice is endless – with 321 pistes across the area, you’ll find tree skiing, cross country skiing, huge powder bowls, beginner slopes, a network of 200 ski lifts and two of the best snowboard parks in Europe. Head over to Courchevel where you will find 150kms of ski terrain. Beginners can learn safely here in dedicated “ZEN” areas before progressing on to one of the 19 green or 35 blue runs, and intermediates and advanced skiers can enjoy 34 red and 8 challenging black runs.
La Tania and Courchevel Winter Activities
There is plenty going on away from the skiing in La Tania and Courchevel ski resorts and with the free daily bus service running between the two resorts from early morning till Midnight, you don’t need your ski’s.
Last winter saw the opening of the extremely impressive 63m Aquamotion Centre, situated at Courchevel 1550. It’s home to indoor and outdoor heated pools, a hammam, spa, sauna, climbing wall, indoor surfing wave and wild river rapids. A great day to be spent here if you want a break from the mountain, and fabulous fun for the kids.
In La Tania, a big hit is the night sledging for children right in the centre of town, and where there is also a cinema. For a more varied activity programme, it is best to head to Courchevel, where the list is endless; take a French cookery course or some flying lessons, drive a piste basher, go quad biking or ice skating, take on some snow-shoeing or enjoy the views from the comfort of a helicopter – to name but just a few of the wonderful experiences to be had.
